ｂｙ　サル

ナンベイヒメウ（Ｂｉｇｕａ）南米姫鵜

日本では「長良川の鵜飼い」で馴染みのある潜水しながら魚を捕らえるカワウの仲間。流れがゆっくりな河川で浮かびながら獲物を探している様子を良く見かける。獲物の大半は全身を硬い鱗で覆われた１０cm程度の小型のヨロイナマズといわれる魚。水中にいない時は、水際の倒木などの枝に止まりながら熱心に羽づくろいをしている。尾羽の付け根にある分泌腺から出る脂を嘴に塗り、その脂を羽根全体に塗り伸ばして防水加工をして水中でも素早い動きをする為にだ。大好物のヨロイナマズを捕らえたが、狡賢い仲間が横取りしようとして、その追跡から必死に逃げようとしていた。

This is the famous Cormorant, the ones that get fishes diving. You always see them looking for fish in a calm river, their favorite food is the Armored Cat Fish, the fishes with thick scale. When they are not in the water, they always stay on dead trees near the river banks, cleaning their feathers or passing all over their bodies an oil from a secreting gland, which makes the feathers impermeable, that’s why they can dive and fly right after.

ナンベイアオサギ（Ｂａｇｕａｒｉ）南米青鷺

日本でも観察できる種。生息分布域によって羽根の色や模様に多少の変化がある。現地では「警報機」というニックネームがついていて、観光客が接近すると大声をあげながら、真っ先に飛び立ってしまう臆病なサギだ。水辺のホテイ草の中に隠れていた３０cmのナマズを捕らえ飲み込んでいる途中に運悪く撮影者に接近されて半飲み状態で驚いて羽根を広げて逃げようとしたところ。このナマズは「カシャーラ」と呼ばれていて食用としても人気のあるかなり大きくなるナマズ（私が釣り上げた最大のもので１ｍ２０ｃｍ、２５kgあった。）日本では「タイガーショベルノーズキャット」という呼称で熱帯魚店で売られている。

White Necked Heron

This specie we can also see in Japan and some more countries, but depending on the region, their feathers can change. They are very shy, when boats or people come closer, they are the first birds to fly away besides telling the other birds that danger is nearby!

In this picture, he found a 30 cm cachara (Tiger Shovel-nose Cat Fish) and is trying to swallow the entire fish, then I got close and unfortunately scared him.

０３「　朝　焼　け　」朝一番の光で日光浴をするナンベイアオサギ

ナンベイアオサギ（Ｂａｇｕａｒｉ）南米青鷺

日の出前の１時間、鳥達が活動し始める時間だ。森中から彼達の鳴き声が響き渡る。森林散策に最も適したすがすがしいひとときだ。このサギも太陽が出ると共に日向に出て、朝一番の光のシャワーを浴びていた。

０４「　渇　き　」喉の渇きをいやすアメリカトキコウ

アメリカトキコウ（Cabeca-seca）亜米利加時鸛

ＰＬの乾期のみ見られる渡鳥。中型のコウノトリの仲間。水場近辺の森などに群れを成して営巣コロニーを形成する。日中の暑さを凌ぐ為、水浴びをしに頻繁に水辺に現れる。胸元を水際まで下げて、大きな嘴を開いて一気に水を汲み取る。水汲み行動を何回か繰り返し、充分に水を溜めて巣まで運び、雛に水を飲ませ、灼熱時にはシャワーのように水を浴びさせることもある。

American Wood Stork

They are immigrants. We just find them during the dry season in Pantanal. At this time they build a big bird colony for reproduction always near a river or lake to ease the food collect, refreshing and bath.

They have a very special way to drink water: They put their neck parallel to the water sheet and drink it all in one turn. They do it a couple of times until their belly is completely full. After that they fly to the nest and give that water to the babies. When the weather is very hot they also bath the babies to refresh.

０５「　いとなみ　」交尾をしているズグロハゲコウ

ズグロハゲコウ（Ｔｕｉｕｉｕ）頭黒禿鸛

パンタナールのシンボルの鳥とされている種。体高１．２ｍ、翼を広げると２ｍにも達する。つがいになると一生連れ添うといわれている。繁殖期は乾期にあたる６〜１０月で、高い椰子の木のてっぺんやイッペーなどの大木など股に直径１ｍほどの大きな巣をかけて子育てする。現地住民は交尾は上空で飛びながら踊る様にするといわれているが眉唾物である。私が観察したものはいずれも地上か巣の上である。

Jabiru Stork

This is the symbol of Pantanal. Standing Size: 1,20m. Wing Span: 2,00m. When they find a partner, they stay together forever. The breeding time is from June to October. Their nest has around 1,00 m of diameter and they build it on the top of a palm tree or big trees like the Ipe Trees. The Pantanal man use to say that they copulate on a high sky as a ballet. In fact, they copulate on the nest or on the ground.

０６「　なわばり　」喧嘩をしているズグロハゲコウ

乾季の水場は戦場と化す。水が干上がる寸前、取り残された魚を求めて近くにいる鳥達が一斉に集まり始める。多い時にはこの巨大なコウノトリだけでも何百羽にもなる。これだけの数の鳥が集まれば魚がなくなるのは時間の問題だ。無我夢中に餌を捕り始めると撮影者の接近にも気を留めなくなる。

The Jabiru Stork fighting to catch a fish.

During the dry season, the rare places with water become a real battle field in search for food. All the birds concentrate on those places to catch the latest fishes stuck in the mud. Once in a while hundreds of Jabirus get together to feed themselves. Obviously the places run out of food in a few hours, then when they are eating they forget about anything else, including me, that gets close to them.

０７「　惨　敗　」喧嘩に負けて草に八つ当たりしているズグロハゲコウ

このコウノトリは面白かった。餌捕りの縄張り争いに負けて追い出されて、悔しくていてもたってもいられなくなり、ついに近くあった手頃な草を相手に喧嘩を始めた。力一杯草をひっぱたり、物凄い勢いで突ついたりと、彼の悔しさが十分に伝わった。あの大きな嘴で突つかれたら冗談では済まされない…

This scene was funny. This guy over here lost the fight and became very angry, now he is mad at the grass, pulling it out without a control, if I was near him, probably I would get injured by him, that was fun, but the punch was not fun at all.

０９「　求　愛　」つがいで仲良く羽づくろいをするクロハラトキ

カオグロクロハラトキ（Curicaca-branca）顔黒黒腹朱鷺

日本では絶滅してしまった朱鷺の仲間。ＰＬでは５種類観察できる。非常に特徴のある甲高い声で飛びながら鳴く。細い嘴で草原や湿地の草むらに隠れている小虫やタニシなどを食べる。かなり長い時間ゆっくりと羽づくろいをしながら求愛していた。お昼時の炎天下、ボートの上で３時間ほど観察してへろへろになった、思いでのある写真である。

Buff Necked Ibis

The birds from this family were already extinct in Japan. In Pantanal we can find five species of Ibis.

They have a characteristic loud scream when they are flying. Their bill is long, curved and thin. They hunt small bugs and mollusks hidden in the marsh.

To get this picture I had to stay over three hours during the hottest hours of the day on the boat, under a 41 degrees sun. I have great memories of this picture!

１０「　い　か　り　」威嚇するクビワサケビドリ

カンムリクビワサケビドリ（Tachã）冠首輪叫鳥

一見桃太郎に出てくる雉に似ているが、実は雁や鴨の仲間。一日の決まった時刻に「叫ぶ？」為、ＰＬの先住民は時計の変わりにしていたと言われている。湿地帯の地面に草を集めて巣をかける。外敵が接近すると、その大きな叫び声で警戒して追い払う。撮影時は生後2週間ほどの雛が2羽いた為、普段よりも叫び声が高くかなり怒っていた様子だった。体長５０cm程と大柄で肉食性が強そうだが、完全な草食性で水草など新芽しか食べない。

Southern Screamer

The Pantanal Native men use to have this bird as a clock because they always scream at right time. They build the nest in the swamp in the dry season. When the predators come close to the nest they scream very loud to scare them away. It’s a quite big bird almost the same size of a turkey. This bird looks carnivorous, but actually they are vegetarian and they eat only sprout aquatic plants.

He was walking with his two children when I got close to shot my camera, he got really mad at me and screamed louder than usual!
